Insider Risk Concern in a Financial Services Organization
Industry: Financial Services
Issue: Insider Threat / Behavioral Instability
Outcome: Resignation + Access Controls
Situation
A financial analyst began displaying unusual behavior following a personal crisis involving divorce and financial stress. Coworkers reported paranoid accusations about colleagues sabotaging his work, and IT personnel noticed attempts to access files unrelated to the employee’s responsibilities.
The organization engaged SafeHaven Security Group to conduct a threat and insider risk assessment.
SafeHaven Assessment
SafeHaven evaluated behavioral indicators, reviewed communications, and coordinated with HR and IT leadership. Key concerns included increasing paranoia toward coworkers, emotional destabilization, and attempts to access unrelated corporate data.
Pathway to Violence Indicators
While emotional instability and grievance were present, there was no evidence of targeting, planning, or approach behavior suggesting progression along a violence pathway.
Hunter vs. Howler Analysis
The behavior was assessed as “Howler-type” behavior characterized by emotional distress and reactive accusations rather than organized targeting.
Management Recommendations
SafeHaven recommended temporary administrative leave, restriction of system access, coordination between HR, legal, and security teams, and encouragement of employee assistance resources.
Outcome
The employee ultimately resigned voluntarily and system access was revoked. No sensitive information was compromised and no safety threats emerged.
