Cold Weather Safety – Employee Steps 

Step 1: Know When Cold Weather Is a Hazard

Remain vigilant regarding cold temperatures, strong winds, precipitation, snow, or icy conditions.

  • Understand that cold weather can cause serious injuries if ignored

Step 2: Identify Cold Weather Risks

  • Know which tasks involve working outdoors or in cold areas

  • Pay attention to wind chill, wet conditions, and long exposure times

  • Speak up if conditions feel unsafe

Step 3: Recognize Cold-Related Illnesses

Learn the warning signs of:

  • Hypothermia (shivering, confusion, fatigue)

  • Frostbite (numbness, pale or hard skin)

  • Trench foot (cold, wet, painful feet)

  • General cold stress

Step 4: Wear Proper Cold Weather Gear

Always wear required protective clothing, such as:

  • Insulated gloves and boots

  • Thermal base layers

  • Windproof and waterproof outerwear

  • Face protection (balaclava, face covering)

  • High-visibility outerwear when required

Step 5: Look Out for Each Other

  • Work under protective observation

  • Watch coworkers for signs of cold stress

  • Speak up and act early

Step 6: Take Preventive Actions

  • Take warm-up breaks as directed

  • Use heated shelters or vehicles when available

  • Drink warm beverages

  • Follow adjusted work schedules during extreme cold

Step 7: Know Basic First Aid for Cold Injuries

Be prepared to:

  • Move affected workers to warmth

  • Remove wet clothing (bring extra socks/pairs)

  • Warm gradually (not aggressively)

  • Know when to call for medical help

Step 8: Watch for Slip and Fall Hazards

  • Use cleared, sanded, or salted walkways

  • Walk carefully on snow or ice

  • Report untreated walkways immediately

Step 9: Be Aware of Snow and Ice Dangers

  • Watch for falling snow, ice, or icicles

  • Stay clear of roof edges and overhead hazards

  • Follow barriers and warning signs

Step 10: Use and Protect Cold Weather Supplies

  • Use provided PPE and safety equipment

  • Report missing, damaged, or empty supplies

  • Keep emergency gear accessible

Step 11: Speak Up and Stay Safe

  • Report hazards, unsafe conditions, or symptoms

  • Follow supervisor instructions during cold weather

  • Safety comes before speed or productivity
